Big Sushi - One of the gazillion sushi places on Bloor

By kat in

Earlier this week, I had dinner with my old housemates. And the guys were late picking me up from class because they were busy playing DOTA -_-"

I was thinking of going to either Sushi on Bloor or New Generation, the usual places we went last year to fill a sushi or bento craving. When I suggested this to Allison, she said both don't taste as good anymore; she recommended Big Sushi instead. So off we went to Big Sushi on Bloor, located in between Spadina and Bathurst.

Guess where I got this picture? Yes, Google Streetview LOL.

There was 7 of us that night (actually 11 of us lived together in a big townhouse last year), and we all ordered their dinner bento sets except for Allison, who ordered a roll and a plate of mini fried tofu.

I had their salmon teryaki bento (which was around $10 something), since I don't like to eat the tempura at these places. It was as simple as it looked: 2 pieces of salmon soaked into thick, salty teriyaki sauce, a pile of rice, 2 mini fried tofus, 1 spring roll (so random! I don't think springrolls are a staple of Japanese food...), and half a small orange.

The verdict? Not worth my 10 bucks at all (or $12 something to be accurate, since there's tax and tips). The teriyaki sauce was so salty, and the salmon was a bit dry. The minature tofus were ordinary, and I gave away my spring roll to Allison. They basically aimed to have the pile of rice to fill you up.

Here's Alvin's dinner bento C: tempura shrimp & veggies, pile of rice, 8 piece of teriyaki salmon, 8 pieces of roll, and half a small orange for ~$15? I had a taste of one of his rolls, and it was very average, like what you get AYCE places (bad quality fish).

I didn't get a chance to take a picture of everyone's dinner, but we all ordered the same thing anyway (teriyaki chicken or teriyaki salmon bento).

In the end, I was pretty disappointed at this dinner. From my memory, for the same amount of money, I could've had better selection and portions at Sushi on Bloor or even AYCE sushi at Mariko down the street for an additional few bucks. Don't think I'll ever be back.

WOW. I did not hear about that... luckily I wasn't in the area that night; I went on a Monday night around that time instead of Saturday. Phew.

That sounds scary though.. since I lived literally a block away from there last year. I always thought it was an okay neighbourhood =S
