Kyu Shou Japanese Noodle House 九州生拉麵 - amazing value lunches

By kat in ,

I didn't even know this place existed until Benben messaged me one night, telling to "blog it up". He had tried a bowl of ramen at this place and thought it was well worth it. What used to be a Korean-owned Japanese sushi restaurant, it is now a Japanese noodle house, serving items such as ramen, udon, tonkatsu, and sushi. Quite a large variety of Japanese foods in fact.

Located at Steeles Ave. East & Silver Star Blvd, Kyu Shou Japanese Noodle House resides in the plaza South-West of the intersection. The one with a Subway franchise + Kenny Noodle's + Golden Elephant pho place.

As the title of this entry states, amazing value means food worth its price. Although the quality is not superb (they are nowhere near Kenzo's ramen or Manpuku's udon) but for $5.99 that includes a bowl of "okay" noodles + your choice of side-dish - uh, yes more please?

This menu shows more clearly what I mean. So from column A on the left-hand side, pick between 1) udon, 2) sho yu ramen (miso ramen) or 3) pork bone soup ramen. Then from the right-hand side, pick any of the 9 side dishes to complement your noodles. The price you pay depends on the side dish (the prices are underneath). As you can tell, they are priced at either $5.99 or $6.99. GOOD DEAL!

Note: #7 Arl bob = tobiko (fish roe) on rice

This is the other side of the menu, consisting of all bento box lunch sets from $5.99 - $8.99.

This is the menu only for lunch, on weekdays and weekends. There's also a much thicker book-like menu where you can order sashimi, sushi, a variety of ramen (they had Tokyo style, Sapporo style, etc.), and more. I just forgot what. And of course, they are priced higher. A bowl of ramen was priced around $7.99 - $9.99 each.

They also served 3 complimentary side dishes: kimchi, marinated (and very 爽/crunchy) bean sprouts, and edaname.

Sho yu ramen (miso flavoured), which included a piece of steamed savoury egg + grilled tofu + slice of naruto + bok choi.

阿媽 ordered the tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) with her sho yu ramen. The skin wasn't super crispy and it was easily separated from the meat, but overall, it was alright. I didn't like the sauce too much however, reminded me of plum sauce + worchester sauce. Quantity-wise, not bad as well. A lot more than Inatei's tonkatsu.

Pork bone soup ramen, included a piece of steamed savoury egg + grilled tofu + half of egg + black fungus + bok choi. The egg was definitely not comparable to Kenzo's half-boiled egg. But the soup did have pork bone flavour, and it was milky white. Not bad!

I chose the seafood pancake. It was around the size of my hand but it tasted pretty good. I tend to like these kind of starch-pancake foods like okonomiyaki.

The bill came up to $14.67 + tips = $16.14 for 2. Great deal. There were also 2 candies if you weren't full still.

阿媽 and I were both quite full but I think if some hungry guys came here, they'd be around 80% full. Benben said he got free additional noodles since he's a first-time customer so it doesn't hurt to try and ask for that!

THEN...
I had take-out from Kyu Shou yesterday for lunch. This lunch menu was also available on Saturdays!

I was pretty hungry by then.

My side-dish was salmon sashimi. There were 5 thin slices and they weren't very good quality. I'd totally stay away from eating raw fish here.

I decided to try their udon from column A. The udon seemed like it was the packaged kind, not that surprising though; I didn't expect them make their own anyway. I'd go to Manpuku for better udon any day.

As for the toppings, there was a piece of steamed savoury egg + grilled tofu + slice of naruto + bok choi + some kind of mushroom + pieces of beancurd.

One major drawback: a lot of MSG was used for the udon's soup base. Like way too much. It wasn't this bad for the other 2 ramens.

I'd recommend the pork bone soup ramen over the other 2 choices (just don't ever order the udon), and I wouldn't come here for their raw fish but for their cooked food instead. However, I'd definitely come back for this cheap lunch combo.

PS. The management and staff are Chinese. The one that looks like the owner's wife speaks Mandarin whereas the waitress that was serving us that day spoke Cantonese.
