La Chine Cuisine 粵式生香 - pretty good dim sum in Richmond Hill

By kat in ,

Located across the street from the cluster of restaurants and bars at Hwy 7 & East Beaver Creek Rd, La Chine Cuisine 粵式生香 offers Cantonese cuisine with a twist. I've been here previously for their $40 per person dinner, and the only thing I remember was their broiled milk soup. It was very different and very filling. Everything else was mediocre.

Upon hearing one of their advertisements that promoted dim sum for $2.20 for all sizes of dishes on weekdays, 阿媽 & I decided to come and try their dim sum. We were quite surprised with the result: they were pretty good!

Their usual dim sum menu (where the $2.20 for all sizes applies).

And this is their special menu.

Baked BBQ pork pastry & 1000 years egg pastry 皮蛋叉燒酥. Very flaky crust & flavourful filling. I don't like century eggs but the pastry barely had any taste of it. Nicely done.

From their special menu, this is the "rice crêpe" 腸粉卷: chicken and bitter melon 涼瓜雞絲, shrimp & scallop 鮮蝦帶子 and vegetarian 羅漢齋. I tried half of each.

This is the chicken and bitter melon steamed roll 涼瓜雞絲.

Shrimp & scallop 鮮蝦帶子. I know this picture just looks like plain steamed rice noodle roll, but there's scallop on the left. This is like those 'Where's Waldo?' kid's book I used to love.

The vegetarian steamed rice noodle roll 羅漢齋. All the rice noodle rolls were not bad.

This is the part where dim sum restaurants usually fail me - their steamed BBQ pork buns are thick, dry and flavourless. The ones here surprised me: the bread part was moist and the filling was tasty. Above average for sure. I think I gobbled the BBQ pork bun really fast since I forgot to take a picture of the inside.

In the same bamboo steamer as the BBQ pork bun 密汁叉燒包, they placed 2 chicken buns 薑粒雞包仔. They were not bad. This 1 BBQ pork bun and 2 chicken & ginger buns dish is on the special menu.

Braised chicken feet 豉汁蒸鳳爪. Delicious here! The sauce was very flavourful and almost too spicy for me and the chicken feet were quite large too. 阿媽 enjoyed it a lot.

2 scallop dumplings & 2 siu mai's 海皇帶子餃 + 魚子蒸燒賣. From the special menu again.

The scallop dumpling looked so cute by itself. I liked it.

Siu mai. Your usual ball of pork.

Lastly, I ordered a crème brûlée 法式焦糖焗蛋 since they ran out of egg tarts.

You can see the sugar sticking to the side of the ramekin.

Crunchy caramel top with a very egg-y custard underneath. The egg custard made it very heavy and filling; I didn't like it too much. Nothing like the one in Paris :(

Overall, they exceeded my expectations. I thought it would be another mediocre restaurant claiming to be fine dining Chinese food but the dim sum was above average and great customer service. I think we were approached by 3 waiters/waitresses in the beginning to ensure we had our tea and near the end, they made sure the remaining dishes will be served soon. I'll probably be coming back just to make sure their quality is consistent.

Ok :( Lesson learned. Don't check Katherine's food blog after midnight, unless you had two portions of dinner.

well least they're not bad singers at all? lol. and that song sounds like it belongs more to jay's album than those 2 guys he's debuting.
